This year we spent Thanksgiving in San Francisco with the usual crowd plus an additional eight (yes, that’s 14 total!). The Bay Area is a fantastic place and we definitely had a good time- save for having to take the following Tuesday off of work due to a nasty cold that I’m still trying to get over.
While in San Francisco we mostly ate fantastic food and sampled a number of beverages (as was the norm in Chicago) but did manage to get out and about enough to snap some pictures. We even made it out to Lafayette to visit the Windhurst clan; but I didn’t have my camera with. Continue reading
Good news! Things have moved past the “dirt” stage…and into the “dirt and water” stage. Yay!
Yep, still nothing super duper exciting but they have hit water. I didn’t hear any pumps going when I took the latest photos on Thursday but I suspect they’ll soon crank them up. A friend recently told me that a very significant portion of the square footage will be below grade; so there will be a bunch of water.

Here we are into week three of Mayo Clinic’s Jacobson Building construction project. I’m pretty sure much of the proton beam part of this facility will be underground considering it includes a particle accelerator, so there’s not much of a change from the second or first weeks except that the hole is getting deeper. Besides the technology in the building needing to go below grade, the downtown campus of Mayo has an extensive network of pedestrian subway tunnels (really nice in the cold of winter or when it’s raining) that have to be accommodated for, along with all the other utility stuff (technical term).
I only did one image this week. Besides the subject not being too interesting just yet, the wind made it less than enjoyable to be atop a parking garage for very long. I did take a number of exposures but the set I edited for HDR had the least amount of movement to contend with: wind plus an active construction site makes it difficult to capture multiple exposures of the exact same scene.

Mayo Clinic recently announced a $100 million gift from patient, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, Richard Jacobson will fund a new building to house the proton beam therapy program. Proton beam therapy is some cool stuff but that’s not what we’re here for.
New buildings funded by generous gifts are really nothing new for Rochester but this one happens to be the first one going up since I’ve taken a real interest in photography. Today was the ground breaking ceremony for the Jacobson building as well as the first day of my little project to document the construction progress. I have wanted to try some architecture photography and I though this would be a good introduction; sort of transition from landscape to architecture as the project progresses. Continue reading
