HDR with Photomatix

I’ve been experimenting with a number of high dynamic range (HDR) post processing tools to add some visual interest to my images. I tried using the native tone mapping tools in Photoshop CS4 with marginal success before testing out a program available through the Mac app store called HDR Darkroom, which made things easier but offered little in the way of quality. I finally decided to buy the Photomatix tone mapping plugin for Photoshop CS4 and, so far, it’s been working great. Continue reading »

Replicating the Metallic Black and White Look

This past weekend it stormed around these parts, pretty bad – and somehow that’s now turned into oppressive heat. Luckily the storms didn’t last long and afterwards I decided to head out as the sun fell and capture a few images of the retreating storm clouds. I’m never inspired by a clear sky – it’s the clouds that make it, and storms make great clouds.

I managed to snap a few decent photos, two of which I developed into black and white images with a look similar to the older metallic black and white prints. Continue reading »

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, Gulf Shores, Alabama

During our last visit to Gulf Shores, Alabama (pre-oil spill) we stayed on the Fort Morgan Peninsula. This area is a lot less developed and has significantly fewer people to contend with compared to the main Gulf Shores beach area and is home to the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Bon Secour is a 6,816 acre wildlife refuge split into five sections: Sand Bayou, Perdue, Little Point Clear, Fort Morgan, and Little Dauphin Island. These sections are made up of a number of habitats home to all sorts of fun wildlife. We really only had a chance to explore the Perdue section, hiking the Pine Beach and Jeff Friend trails.
